Walkable Crown Hill Gets Funding
We got funded!
In case you hadn't heard, Walkable Crown Hill got word in March that it received a Small and Simple Grant from the Department of Neighborhoods to support our Crown Hill Pedestrian Planning Process.   This award came thanks in large part to your support and commitment to participate.  Now that we've signed the contract with the city, we are officially launching this planning initiative and would like to bring you up to speed on our current and upcoming activities and ask for your help in a few key ways.

What's happening:
- Next 2 weeks:    We are accepting proposals from design firms to support the planning efforts and to create our planning document based on the ideas and input of all of us in the neighborhood.  We hope to have someone hired and on board ASAP.
- May 10-24:    We will be doing some neighborhood surveys to assess residents' and business owners' habits, concerns, and ideas around walking in Crown Hill.
- May 15 - June 15:    We will be doing traffic speed and volume checks at a number of locations throughout the neighborhood from mid-May to mid-June.
- May 17:    We will be participating in SDOT's neighborhood walking tours to provide input to the city-wide Pedestrian Master Plan.  While this is a completely separate process from our own planning, it can inform ours and make sure our own issues are on the table for the city's planning.
- May 31, June 14 (tentative):    We will be hosting two design charrettes (planning sessions) to work together as neighbors to create our Crown Hill Pedestrian Plan.  The details and firm dates will be announced once the design firm is hired.

What you can do:
- Participate in the planning!!:   Your input on the surveys and participation in the walking tour and especially the design charrettes are crucial.  It's your neighborhood - please help make it your plan.
- Survey the neighborhood:   We will be doing door-to-door surveys prior to the first charrette for as much of the neighborhood as we have volunteers to cover.  Help us reach out to a block or two of your neighbors.
- Take traffic data:   The more data we have on current vehicle traffic the better we can identify and prioritize problem areas.
- Spread the word!:   Let your neighbors know this process is important to you and to them.

If you'd like to help with any of these efforts or have questions, contact Bert Hopkins at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 206-388-2781.

Thanks, and see you in the streets!

Neighbors Wanted

Call for Crown Hill Neighborhood board members

You are invited to celebrate the first anniversary of the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association at the CHNA 1st  Annual Meeting on Saturday May 17,  2008.

CHNA grew from the initiative of a group of concerned local citizens who wanted to ensure the neighborhood's open space at the Crown Hill School site was developed into a beautiful park and the adjacent building grows into a bustling community center where we can take classes, see concerts, taste good wine, celebrate our kids' birthday parties or just gather and enjoy life in general.

We can proudly say that, in only our first year of operation, CHNA has played a pivotal role in influencing the School Board to protect community interests in the Crown Hill School site property and in securing funds from the City and State.  We also planned many successful events, including a neighborhood-wide garage sale, and meetings with elected officials, including the Mayor, City Council members, School Board members, a State Senator, and the new superintendent of Parks.  We coordinated efforts to obtain neighborhood improvements, such as traffic circles.

April 3rd, 2008

Picture of Tim Gallagher  On April 3rd at the former Crown Hill Elementary around 40 of our neighbors turned out to see Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tim Gallagher speak about his vision for parks in Seattle, and particularly about Crown Hill’s future park. The audience included representatives of the many organizations with a stake in the park: Crown Hill Neighborhood Association, Sustainable Crown Hill, Walkable Crown Hill, Groundswell Northwest, Northwest Little League, Ballard Youth Soccer, Crown Hill Business Association, Small Faces and the Crown Hill Project. Each group had an opportunity to explain to Gallagher why this open space is important to them. Seattle School Board member Peter Maier also attended in order to learn more about our neighborhood and our efforts on the park.
